Medifast

So...been a long time. After my wedding in 2007 I slowly, but steadily gained weight...before I got pregnant in Aug 2011, I was 40 lbs over my wedding weight and now, 12 months after my son was born, I am sitting at 20 lbs heavier than that.

Time for a change...a real change.

I started Medifast on Wednesday...so far I've not been hungry. I've not been tempted once to cheat..I think mostly because I am paying a lot of money to do this plan and I'd only be hurting my wallet and my waistline.

I was really concerned about the food...that it would be horrible...because, I mean most of it is what I call "astronaut food"...powdered things that need to be reconstituted with water. But I've been pleasantly surprised! I had the chocolate pudding as a shake based off some tips I read online and omg was it tasty and filling.

Now, I'm not gonna lie...you do NOT get that full and satisfied feeling after each of the 6 meals, but you also are not hungry. I've been really good about taking my time with each meal...not woofing it down like I normally would.

Water has ALWAYS been a challenge and will continue to be. I am doing well with it so far. Was originally aiming for the 64 oz goal, but now I'm pushing myself to get the real recommended "half your body weight in ounces" which is higher than I'd prefer, but it is what it is haha.

Today is Day 3 and I woke up with a TERRIBLE headache over my right eye. I went online and it seems this is very common and a good sign that your body is entering ketosis or the fat-burning phase. I guess I can deal with a headache if it means shedding some of this weight.

So here I am...I'm feeling very determined, motivated and excited as I progress. I actually can't wait for my first weigh-in on Wednesday! I'm taking measurements, too, because I know that some weeks I may not lose pounds, but my body still might have changed. It helps to prevent discouragement y'know?

My mentality is to treat every single day as Day 1...giving it my all and staying 100% on plan. I got this.

Evil Pig Pickin'

So tomorrow is my in-laws' annual pig pickin'...it's a pretty big deal seeing as how there will be ~50 people showing. My father-in-law invested in a pig cooker back in the 80s...used to do pig pickins all the time, but then stopped. We convinced him to get that cooker back working about 4 years ago and the rest is history.

Anyway...everyone is to bring a dish...well I'm bringing Chess Squares! They are kind of like a cheesecake brownie? Soooooo evil and oh so good. Warning...these are RICH, but will still manage to disappear quickly. My mission will be leave some for the guests haha. Here's the recipe:

CHESS SQUARES

Part One
1 box yellow cake mix
1 egg
1 stick of butter, softened

Preheat oven to 325. In a stand mixer, combine all ingredients with a dough hook until completely mixed...like a pie crust (you can do this with a spoon, but it's quite the workout). Press into greased, 9 x 13 baking dish.

Part Two
8oz cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
1 box confectioner's sugar

With hand mixer (or just clean the stand mixer bowl and change to wire whisk attachment), combine all ingredients until completely mixed. Pour over the cake layer and spread evenly.

Metal pan - Bake 40 minutes
Glass/Ceramic - Bake 50 minutes

Cool completely before cutting...which is going to be a gooey matter altogether, but it's worth it. These keep well for a while in an air-tight container. I layer mine with wax paper when making a lot.

This Is Why Mandy's Fat

So I ordered Jackie Warner's new book (like way new...released April 27) and read it in 2 nights. There is a LOT of information in it, but the basic premise is how to eat in order to max out the potential of essential, natural weight loss hormones in your body through consistent exercise and eating well.

She's also really big on the evils of refined sugar and all the sketchy things found in processed food (she and Jamie Oliver should hang out). She's also very pro-organic and not big on dairy except for eggs and some low-fat cheeses. It's all about "clean" eating.

I'm not trying to give her plan away, but the basics are:

Eating (eat all of the following in a day spread across 5 meals)
Four, 4 oz servings of lean protein
Three, 1 cup servings of vegetables
Two, whole fruits OR two, 1 cup servings of fruit
Two, 1 cup servings of whole grains
One, serving of fat (1/4 cup nuts, 1/4 avocado, 2 Tbsp oil etc)

Exercise
Cardio - 20 minutes of intervals (which are insane by the way), 5 days a week
Power Circuit Strength Training - 30 min, 3 days a week

Treat Meals
Two meals per weekend can be "treat meals" meaning eat whatever you want so long as those meals do not exceed 1500 calories each. I think that's pretty flippin' doable.

Supplements (Optional, but recommended for optimum loss of body fat)
Multivitamin
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Fish Oil, flaxseed, walnuts etc)
Vitamin C - Ester-C 500 mg
Amino Acids (liquid, powder or pill form...can be mixed in smoothies or taken alone)
Creatine - Ethyl Ester HCL (not regular)
CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) - 1-3mg with breakfast, lunch and dinner
Whey Protein (Isolate) - in smoothie form

Whew...that's a lot of information right there, but the book is full of eye-opening facts about why we are the way we are, what's really in our food, how to get the best mindset as well as a ton of photos of the exercises and plenty of sample food menus and recipes.

The point of all this...I'm going to try this starting on Monday. I've got to do some grocery shopping to prepare, but I think it's worth trying. Certainly can't hurt, right?

Oh and if you know her from her old Bravo show Workout, know that she has another show coming later this year called Thintervention. I can't wait!

Resetting and Sticking With It

Yeah...I meant well at the beginning of 2010. For about one week. Fail.

When our family went on a trip to Costa Rica at the end of February...well putting on a bathing suit and realizing it's becoming itty-bitty while you're not is NOT fun. But it was a hard realization that things had gotten bad.

Add to it that right before the trip, I finally made an appt with a General Practitioner. I haven't had one since maybe high school and I'll be 32 this year so...yeah. When they weighed me...I was 180...the highest I have been since 2004. I told myself then that I would NEVER be that size again...and yet, there I was.

We ran a battery of tests...thyroid, cholesterol, vitamin levels...I mean it was 8 pages of tests. Everything normal. This was almost a letdown since I knew that meant one thing. I was the problem and I couldn't blame it on anything else.

She and I discussed how I have put on 40 lbs in the 2 years since I got married. How my libido is pretty low, which is probably to do with the poor body image and self esteem I have even though my husband still desires me.

She asked if I was depressed. I said I didn't think so...I mean I'm a pretty upbeat and positive person. I said I might have a mild bout due to my weight and low libido. She suggested Wellbutrin.

Now...I have never been on an antidepressant and was really hesitant. She said that it's been prescribed a lot lately for women who suffer from HSDD (Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder)...the study she's referring to is here:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,587425,00.html

ANYway she said I should give it a try...if I have any strange side effects that I should contact her, otherwise she would see me in 6 weeks. She also said it has been helpful with people who have issues with weight in that it can help to suppress the appetite.

I can say that I started taking Wellbutrin SR (generic anyway) on March 9 and so far...so good. To me, it seems to be acting like willpower in pill form. It's not that I'm not hungry...but food just isn't on my mind 24/7 like it used to be.

I used to be able to have nothing but healthy food choices all around me...I pre-planned my meals, ate every 2-3 hours, but I still would feel like I was starving and would break down and go to the vending machine or run out to get fast food. I never felt satisfied.

Now, I still pre-plan my meals and eat every 2-3 hours, but I have NO trouble sticking to this. I do not EVER feel deprived. Used to, if there were cupcakes or anything in our breakroom I could NOT resist. Now, it doesn't bother me at all.

I'm still waiting for the libido thing to kick in ;) But I can tell you that I AM feeling better about myself as my clothes begin to fit just a bit better.

I haven't yet weighed since that wake-up call Dr appt, but I plan to this Friday. I'm hoping I am down at least 5 lbs. Surely between eating well and getting in my exercise I will see something positive.

Oh, and I'm logging my food with both my GoWear Fit software and Weight Watchers online. I just like to see how things balance out. Also am still going to the gym and doing some DVDs (Jillian Michaels, Kettlenetics and Jackie Warner).

Wish me luck, but I promise you...THIS time I will succeed! My bathing suit is GOING to fit this Summer :)

Confession Time

Ok so...first things first...last week...I lied to you...I lied to me. This is sad.

After the first awesome week on Weight Watchers, well...the second week was NOT awesome. I ate pretty much whatever I wanted all that week and lied to you guys when I said I got on the scale and it hadn't moved.

The truth is...I didn't even get on the scale because I was too afraid of the damage I KNEW I had done.

However, I have been 100% good this week...I faced the scale and it hasn't changed since two weeks ago. So I really must have done some damage that week I was balls out eating.

I did take all of my measurements this morning and will take them again one month from now. I do know I have lost 3 inches in my waist since I started this journey. That's something.

So this is the start of the new week. I will admit that I was angry with myself and got a pumpkin spice latte on the way in, but all of my healthy food is here for the rest of the day. I WILL stay on track!!!

02 October 2009

I heart Weight Watchers!

You guys you guys! I weighed in this morning and am down 2.8 for a total of....10.8 (since July)!! I finally hit and crossed the 10-pound mark!!!

Something huge...I NEVER, EVER look at myself in the mirror unclothed, right? Well...I did today for the first time in forever. No, I'm not ready for Playboy just yet, but the big news is...I didn't HATE myself!!! For the first time in a long time I felt somewhat comfortable in my own skin. Guys, this is huge for me. Huge!

I am really liking Weight Watchers...I like that I am never starving. I like that I can eat "normal" foods that are actually good for me and still lose weight. This is working! My goals for next week are:

- work out at least 5 days/week
- drink at least 80 oz of water/day
- stay within my points
- lose 2 lbs

Rededication to Fitness

Since I rededicated to the eating portion of being healthy (by joining Weight Watchers online) I feel it's time to rededicate to my working out.

For a while I was doing Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred DVD 5 days per week and by the end of 3 weeks I was up to doing Level 2 without breaks. Then I took a break...only a much longer break than I intended ;)

Now I'm back and I'm going to do it and the Kettlenetics workout together. I think I will do the strength/toning from Kettlenetics in the morning and Shred after work. I seem to not be able to do too much cardio first thing in the morning...I just run out of steam and only do things 50%.

I did discover that by having a serving of edamame as my late afternoon snack that I can really power through a workout. I bought 8 servings of it at Sam's this past weekend. It's just steamed soybeans in the pod with some salt, but they are great for munching...99 cals and 8g protein.
